I happened to stumble upon sliders many years ago, and since then I have
survived multiple cancellations, mid-season replacements, character changes
and every other possible horror a TV series can endure.
What drew me into Sliders was its premise, although it was nothing
really new it had many aspects which I loved. The early seasons(which I am
most familiar with, revolve around a young physcist and a device he made
which allows travelling between parallel worlds. Now as a physicist myself,
who has an interest in the high energy things(wormholes/extra dimensions) I
was instantly hooked. Here we have a primetime series projecting physicists
in a good light. It also starred one of my most favorite actors, John Rhys
Davies who ,in case you forgot, was a regular in the Indiana Jones movies.
Now the main purpose of this page is to not only say I love Sliders, but to
share with you some pictures I got when I met the original four sliders. Quin, Remmy,Proffessor, and Wade. Hmmmm...wade ;)
As most of you probably know Vancouver has come to be known as Hollywood
North, therefore it is quite common to see film trailers lining the side of
the street on one of your daily drives. Many popular shows such as Highlander,
The Outer limits, The Sentinel, and formally X-files and Sliders have been
filmed in Vancouver. And quite often these shows blessed UBC(my school and
home) with their presence. And one fateful day, Sliders came to UBC (and
there was much rejoicing).
This day at UBC they were filming at two different locations on campus:
the first was in some lecture halls in the Chemistry building, and the second
was in a conference room on the upper floor of the Student Union Building(or
SUB). I can't remember how long they were there for, it was only 1 or 2 days.
So after I finished my classes I got my good friend and fellow fan and we
staked out the set in the chemistry building.
If memory serves me, this was the episode where they think they got home,
only to discover the second Arturo taking credit for the sliding technology.
It was most interesting to actually watch the filming, if one of the
characters messed up their lines they would just start again. Being there and
knowing that this stuff was going to be on national TV was very cool. And one
interesting little tidbit, in the scene there is a discussion with wade,
quinn and the professor and wade storms out. It looks like day, but when they
were filming it it was actually pitch black outside.
Now in these first three pictures you will notice that Rembrandt is not
in them, that is because he wasn't in that see. We saw him later but I will
get to that in a bit. Now you may be wandering what they were like in Person?
I can assure you they were very friendly, and very up for having their
pictures taken. I am assuming this is because we were very patient, we waited
for the set to end and filming to wrapup for the day and approached them
pleasantly and announced ourselves as fans. This is only still in 1st/2nd
season, so it wasn't a big hit yet.
In the picture with Quinn and wade, I actually had my arm around Sabrinna,
and my friend had hers around Jerry. I have cut myself out because it was
before my beard and contact lenses days and I don't want to scare you. So for
all you SL fans out there I got to have my hand around her *grin*(just wanted
to rub that in =). And the picture of JRD is actually one of Him and myself,
and he squished his face next to mine. I was more than willing to just have
the picture taken of him standing beside me but hey, also he was the one who
took the picture =)
They were in a hurry so before we knew it our run in with the famous was
over, but we still felt incomplete because we had not met Cleavant
Derricks(Remmy).
Now a few days later I received a phone call from a friend of mine who was
in downtown Vancouver. And she told me she saw the sliders trailers again. So
I packed my bag(I had a final the next day in Math 317) and headed downtown.
One of the crew members noticed us and recognized us from UBC, and we talked
with him about getting a picture of all 4 original sliders together(he saw
we had been waiting in the alley near the trailers for a couple hours as well)
. So he said all we had to do was wait across the street until the shoot was
over. So we went across and stood with the gathering masses and waited until
it was over. Unfortunately we missed our chance(we were supposed to approach
him after the shoot and we thought he would approach us), and Quinn and the
Prof left to go home. When we saw this happening we followed Wade and Remmy
and waited outside their trailers for them to come out. Sabrina recognized us,
and was once again her friendly self and posed in front of her trailer with
Cleavant.
This day of filming was a different episode, unfortunately I cannot
remember which one. They did some filming near the Orpheum and in the
Commodore(a night club). I recall seeing election posters on telephone poles
and Remmy was either loved or hated in this world I cannot remember which. I
know it is either from the first or second season and it would have been aired
near the air date of the good/evil professor episode.
I know it is not alot of info to go on but f any of you out there know
the name of this episode and what it was about please drop me an email. Thanks.
